WILLIAM ANDREW ‘BILLY’ BAROLOMEW

Bartholomew was London born and played in dance bands in England, Scotland, and France.

In 1924, he moved to Germany, playing in the orchestras of Eric Borchard and Julian Fuhs .

He founded his Eden Five in 1927 which soon grew to his big band.

During 1928 his orchestra became very popular at the Delphi Palace in Berlin during which time he recorded as The Delphians, including recordings in English sung by Al Bowlly.

This orchestra continued until 1938, recording for the Odeon and Kristall labels.

Though the orchestra had many strong soloists, it rarely played jazz.

During the Nazi era he had to play down his Englishness, advertising that he only employed German soloists.

Despite this, his bookings dropped. He returned to England at the end of 1938, performing as a musical clown and entertainer  although some of his German recordings were released in 1939.
